Artist's Note:

Birthday. Mum is busy, guests are gathered, the lights go out. Under the familiar music, they bring out the cake—a mix of cream and musk, topped with bright cherries, edible flowers, and a hard plastic figure placed neatly at the centre of the festive display. Eyes like gems, stiff hair tied with ribbons. We look into each other’s eyes as the lights flicker on our faces. Inhale, pause, exhale quickly—dark. Screams, blessings, the beginning.
