People often think a small gallery is just a starting point before it grows into something bigger. For us, that does not have to be the case.
The Charoen AArt is an independent artist-run space in a shophouse in Bang Kho Laem, Bangkok. Being small shapes how we work, how we collaborate with artists and how we prepare each exhibition.
Small enough to pay attention
We do not feel we need to rush to make the gallery bigger. Being small gives us time to listen, adapt and work closely with artists. It also gives us time to talk with visitors, answer questions and look at the work together.
Most projects begin with a conversation. An artist might bring finished work, an initial idea or something they are still experimenting with. Together, we work out how it could be shown, how much time it needs and what we need to prepare, including production and installation.
The artist continues to guide the artistic direction of the work. We think together about how to present it and what visitors might experience.
Small does not mean less. It gives us time to pay attention to the details.
The building is part of how we work
The shophouse that is now The Charoen AArt was once a family home and office. It was not designed as a gallery, and we do not try to hide its original character.
The size of the rooms, the light coming in, the stairs and the views of the work all affect how we arrange an exhibition. Sometimes they create limitations. Other times, they lead us to ways of showing work that we had not considered.
We do not use the same format for every exhibition. Instead, we take time to work out how to arrange each piece within the space.
Growing in our own way
We want to meet new artists, welcome more visitors, let this space grow at its own pace and build relationships with people in Thailand and beyond.
But for us, growth does not always mean a bigger space or doing more. It might mean working better with artists, thinking through exhibitions more carefully, maintaining relationships with the people we work with and learning from each project.
That kind of growth matters to us too.
For now, we are happy to remain a small gallery. Small enough to listen, small enough to adapt and small enough to remember why we started.
