Toros and Menina: A Closer Look
The Charoen AArt presents Toros and Menina, two small-scale works by Spanish artist Luis Rodríguez Puñal. Toros uses oil paint on printed paper, while Menina combines drawing, colour and pattern.
Two works, two approaches
Toros is painted in oil on printed paper relating to Madrid’s Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas. Its underlying lettering and imagery remain visible alongside passages of black, yellow and red paint, making the printed material part of the finished composition. In contrast, Menina, an original drawing on paper from 2017, places a stylised central figure within a loosely drawn interior, where geometric areas of colour and pattern sit against fine lines describing the surrounding space. Together, the works reveal two distinct approaches: in Toros, painted marks interact with imagery already on the paper, while in Menina, colour and pattern interact with the drawn figure and its setting.
Framing and glazing
Each work is presented in a custom ash wood shadow-box frame with Crescent Select matboard, a DuPont Tyvek liner, 5 mm Artcare foam board and Tru Vue Classic AR anti-reflective glass. The glazing provides up to 70% UV protection.
