IMPERMANENCE: Fractured Memories, Shifting Realities, Echoes of What Once Was

The Charoen AArt presents IMPERMANENCE, a new mixed-media series by Thai photographer Bryce Watanasoponwong. The exhibition features 18 works that reflect on the fragility of memory and the transformations of life, on view from 12 October to 7 December 2025.

IMPERMANENCE asks: when vivid memories gradually fade and fragment, what remains? The works draw inspiration from Buddhist thought and the writings of Daisaku Ikeda, which emphasise creating value in the face of impermanence.

Each piece begins with a photograph, layered with abstract images produced through experiments with light, kaleidoscope lenses, slide film, and cross-processing. Colours overlap to suggest the shifting nature of memory, while miniature 3D-printed figures in different postures appear across the surfaces. From many to one, their gradual reduction becomes a metaphor for memory dissolving over time.

For me, impermanence is not about loss but transformation. It is about finding meaning that continues even as details fade,” says Bryce Watanasoponwong.

The exhibition also connects with a wider tradition of artists who have expanded the boundaries of photography. Robert Rauschenberg combined photographs with objects in his Combines. Gerhard Richter painted over photographic prints. Do Ho Suh, Antony Gormley, and Yayoi Kusama each used repetition to reflect on memory, presence, and time. Bryce extends these approaches by placing miniature 3D-printed figures directly onto photographic prints, turning each work into both an image and a record of memory’s erosion.
